Kid Loco

Kid Loco

(Jean-Yves Prieur, France.)

"Kid Loco is a Paris-based DJ-producer who records lush, melodic, mainly instrumental electronica."

The ambient, atmospheric style of his music has prompted critical comparisons with his fellow French artists, Air and Dimitri From Paris. Prieur, who was originally known as Kid Bravo, played guitar in a number of French punk bands during the early 80s but became more interested in production, helping set up the Bondage label.

The impact of rap music prompted a change in direction and by the late 80s Prieur was playing reggae and hip-hop with Mega Reefer Scratch. The synth-based Catch My Soul followed before, in 1996, Prieur adopted the Kid Loco moniker for the Blues Project EP on France's Yellow Productions. A Grand Love Story followed in 1997, prompting widespread praise in both the rock and dance music fraternities for Prieur's lush, organic sampling and romantic sensibility.

The album was denied a US release because of sample clearance problems. Jim O'Rourke, Dimitri From Paris, and Saint Etienne contributed remixes for the US mini-album Prelude To A Grand Love Story, which also featured three tracks from the original album. Prieur's own remix duties have included work for Pulp, Saint Etienne, High Llamas, Mogwai, Stereolab, Talvin Singh, and the Pastels. Several of these remixes were compiled on the Jesus Life For Children Under 12 Inches album.
